Know your next step.

The Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) evaluates employees who have violated DOT drug and alcohol testing regulations and recommends education, treatment, follow-up testing, and aftercare. The process centers on public safety and each individual’s needs.

01 / EVALUATE

Initial SAP evaluation

An individualized assessment to understand the circumstances and determine appropriate education and/or treatment recommendations.

02 / FOLLOW THROUGH

Follow-up evaluation

A review of participation and successful compliance with the SAP’s recommendations before the next stage of the return-to-duty process.

03 / COORDINATE

Employer communication

Required SAP reporting and follow-up testing recommendations help employers understand their role in the return-to-duty process.

The return-to-duty process

One step at a time.

Knowing what to expect can make an unfamiliar process easier to navigate.

Completion depends on your evaluation and recommendations. No specific completion date or return to employment is guaranteed.

1. Complete your initial evaluation

Meet with a qualified SAP for an assessment and individualized recommendations.

2. Follow your recommendations

Participate in the education and/or treatment prescribed by your SAP.

3. Attend your follow-up evaluation

Your SAP determines whether you have demonstrated successful compliance and provides the required report.

4. Coordinate with your employer

The employer arranges required return-to-duty testing and decides whether you may resume safety-sensitive work. Required follow-up testing continues after return.

A little clarity

Questions are a good place to start.

What does a SAP do?

A SAP evaluates DOT drug and alcohol testing violations and recommends education, treatment, follow-up testing, and aftercare. The SAP also evaluates compliance with those recommendations.

How long does the process take?

There is no single timeline. Your recommendations and progress determine when a follow-up evaluation is appropriate. A timeline cannot be established before your initial assessment.

Does completing the SAP process guarantee my job?

No. The employer makes employment and return-to-duty decisions. Successful SAP compliance does not replace the required return-to-duty test or other applicable requirements.

How should I prepare for an appointment?

Before your appointment, confirm the required paperwork, fees, evaluation format, and any employer or testing documents you should bring.
